Wasting Away? Reducing Food Waste from Farm to Fork

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers' report: Global Food; Waste Not, Want Not recently called for urgent action to prevent 50% of all food produced in the world from ending up as waste.

This is a complex issue which needs multi-disciplinary stakeholder groups to collaborate to find solutions. Policy makers, scientists, engineers, industry, retail and consumers all have a role.

SCI, a multi-disciplinary forum connecting science and business to tackle major challenges facing society, is holding a conference on this critical issue on 5 March 2013. Waste Not Want Not: Agri-Food Waste Solutions for a Hungry World will bring together representatives from all the key stakeholder groups to discuss agri-food waste and initiatives to address the problem across the world from farm to fork.

The speakers at the conference come from a range of organisations including, the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Sainsbury’s, Canfield University and Campden BRI.

There will also be a showcase of some of the projects now underway to take advantage of the opportunities to reduce food waste.
