Every scientist knows that funding is critical to research.

To guide you through the funding minefield, PlantSci has brought together all information relating to funding in one place. Whether you’re looking for current funding opportunities, recently awarded grants or information on funding bodies that support UK plant science research, look no further.

Highlighting the latest opportunities

By simply selecting from the options above you’ll be able to find calls and initiatives in a particular area, from a particular funder or in a specific category such as fellowships. You can also search for opportunities by deadline e.g. 1 month from now.

We endeavour to include as many opportunities as we can, but inevitably we might miss some out. It might be useful to have a look at the following pages for more funding calls: Innovate UK, BBSRC, NERC, Horizon 2020 and ERC.  If you know of other opportunities that we should be listed please get in contact.

FLF will provide support for researchers wishing to undertake independent research and gain leadership skills. Awards are for three years and include personal salary as well as support for travel and subsistence, training activities, and research consumables. It is expected that around 12 fellowships will be awarded, each at a value of up to £300k. In addition to this investment, it is also expected that a substantial demonstration of support for the fellow be made by the host Research Organisation (e.g. in terms of access to facilities and equipment, training, research costs etc.). Applications are welcome from candidates seeking flexible working arrangements (e.g. part-time). Proposals can be submitted in any area of science within our remit. We particularly encourage applications that are aligned with our overarching strategic priorities (see related links including our strategic priorities). Aimed at Early career researchers who want to conduct their own independent research within a host laboratory. Applicants will have demonstrated high potential and have no more than five years of postdoctoral research experience. The call is open to current PhD students who are expected to have completed their PhD viva exam prior to announcement of the awarded FLFs (30 November 2015).

Available funding for this competition has increased from £5m to £6m thanks to £1m additional funding from NERC (Natural Environment Research Council). Innovate UK is to invest in collaborative R&D and feasibility studies to stimulate innovation in conventional fossil fuels. The aim is to improve efficiency, reduce cost and minimise the environmental impact of coal, natural gas and oil. Projects must be business-led and all must involve an SME. Unconventional fossil fuels such as shale gas, shale oil and tar sands are outside the scope of this competition.

NERC is inviting proposals to its International Opportunities Fund (IOF). The IOF scheme provides resources to NERC-supported researchers to allow them to forge long-term partnerships with overseas scientists that add value to current NERC-funded science. IOF grants are pump-priming, to help stimulate novel research collaborations. Mature research collaborations should apply to NERC's Standard or Large Grant schemes, which allow for overseas project partnerships, or to other appropriate sources of funding. Proposals must be submitted using the research councils' Je-S system. Applicants should select Proposal Type - 'Standard Proposal' and then select the Scheme - 'International Opportunities Fund' and the call - 'International Opportunities Fund 2015 - Pump Priming'. Deadline for applications 16:00 on 30th April 2015.
